I received a call on my Ask JW Hotline from a woman that was very happy with her new synthetic lawn but during the hot summer months she was having a hard time combating the smell of urine from her three Doberman pinchers. She had flushed her synthetic turf thoroughly, and stated that the more she washed, the smell got worse. I told her that introducing moisture to combat pet urine without the use of pet deodorizing chemicals that are enzyme driven will only spread the bacteria and make it harder to control reoccurring smells.

Dog urine is a concoction of ammonia, bacteria, hormones, and uric acid. As the urine breaks down, the ammonia concentration increases and then mercaptans (extreme odors) are produced. This is the same chemical compound that gives skunk spray its long lasting funk. Uric acid contains crystals that are left behind on the surface of the synthetic turf fibers, even after the urine has dried. These crystals are reactivated anytime new moisture reaches the area, including humidity or after a heavy rainfall.  A dog’s urine also acts as a scent marker designed to let other animals know this territory is taken. This potent combination gives dog urine its staying power long after the spot has dried and is the reason specialized dog urine cleaners and deodorizers are so indispensable.

I recommend applying Turf Fresh in the early afternoon or evening. Applying Turf Fresh in the hot temperatures will cause the Turf Fresh to dry out before its powerful enzymes are able to work themselves throughout the synthetic turf system.

Prior to applying Turf Fresh, make sure the turf is clean of any dog spoils, trash, leaves, etc.  I recommend using a leaf blower to blow out any excess particles prior to the application.

I recommend pre-washing the surface fibers by spraying water directly on the surface and brush the surface aggressively with a stiff push broom. This will clean off any residue of dirt, mud, food spills, etc.

Prior to placing Turf Fresh, make a final rinse.

Turf Fresh comes in an easy to use connecting spray nozzle that attaches to a standard water hose. This ensures complete coverage and prevents excessive waste.

Soak the entire synthetic turf surface making sure the Turf Fresh Chemical penetrates to the base of its fibers.

If you have assistance, it is best to spray the Turf Fresh and agitate at the same time so that you can work the enzymes deep into the surface fibers and down to the backing.

If you have any dog spoils, spoils or hard to remove stains, you may spray additional Turf Fresh in those areas then scrub with a hand brush.

If you have or rented a powerbroom machine, it is best to powerbroom against the fibers, grooming the surface while working the Turf Fresh into the fibers.

Once you completed the Turf Fresh Application, it is best to give the surface a quick and final rinse.
